new reading task

Hi,

Today's lesson is about social etiquette, proper behaviour in society. Of course, rules differ from a country to country. In order to communicate successfully with people from different countries, we need to be aware of these cultural differences.

This afternoon we'll be visiting Thailand. It might be a good idea if you find some interesting facts about Thailand to share with the class. If you want to know more about what Thai people eat or how they get around Bangkok, check out the bbc teachers' blog for this month and have a tour with Anne Bell.

And while you are in the Far East, why don't you visit Australia (the flight can't be very long)? You need to know about the social etiquette there? Then visit Jemma' s students' blog and read about what is considered polite behavour in Australia.

How different is it from your country? Feel free to comment.

See you this afternoon,
ralitza

I like to write to you about one sport game in Thailand i found it so
Interesting its called Sepaktakraw dose any one know any thing about it?
Don't think so , I had a chance knowing about this nice game that a lot of
People play in different country's I like to tell you about this game.
One of the country's where they play in it is Thailand and its played in
Philippine , Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia , Canada , Australia,Uk and other
Countries

Sepak Takraw (Kick Volleyball) is one of the hottest recreational/sports activities, that is basically a cross between football and volleyball, played on a badminton court with a hand-woven ball (takraw). Three players on each side of a 5-foot high net get three chances to kick, knee, shoulder, or head a takraw ball back to the opposing team. Like Volleyball, players try to play the ball toward the front of the net, making the best use of their three hits to pass, set and spike, as opposing players attempt to block - but all without using hands or arms, just like football! It is very exciting to play, and is a great spectator sport! Developed in Asia, this game also introduces some unique aspects of Asian culture.
The benefits of Takraw are that it: can be played as a solo activity, group recreation, or team sport; can be played indoor or outdoor; develops excellent eye-foot co-ordination, leg strength, and flexibility; enhances the skills required for playing football; and is very inexpensive to play.
The name of the game comes from the words Sepak, a term used in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia which translates into "kick", and Takraw, a term used in Thailand which means "woven ball
THE BALL
The Sepak Takraw ball shall be spherical, made up of one woven layer of synthetic fibre, having 12 holes and 20 intersections. If it is made of rattan, it shall consist of 9 – 11 strands. For the men's event, the ball circumference shall not be less than 42 cm, or 1 ft. 4 1/2; in., and not more than 44 cm, or 1 ft. 5 5/16 in., (43 cm, or 1 ft. 4 15/16 in., to 45 cm, or 1 ft. 5 3/4; in., for the women's event). The weight before play shall not be less than 170 g, or 6 oz., and not more than 180 g, or 6.35 oz., for the men's event (150 g, or 5.3 oz., to 160 g, or 5.6 oz., for the women's event).
THE PLAYERS
A match is played by two "Regu's", each consisting of three players.
One of the three players shall be near the back of the court and he/she is called a "Tekong" (Server).
The other two players shall be in front, closer to the net, one on the left and the other on the right. The player on the left is called a "Left Forward" and the player on the right is called a "Right Forward

Hi Fatina,

How unusual this game is! Tell me, what did you actually have to do for the Asian games and do you know how to play sepaktakraw?

Providing the links is an excellent idea. Thanks.
